Your Safety & Induction Guide: Essential Information for New & Returning Customers
At Birmingham Self Storage, we use smart technology to provide you with 24/7 access to your belongings. To ensure your safety and the smooth operation of our unstaffed facilities, all new customers must complete a brief, mandatory induction with a member of our staff on their first visit.
This guide outlines what to expect during your induction and serves as a handy refresher for our existing customers.
1. The Induction Process
- When does it happen? Your induction will take place on your very first visit to the site, after your booking is confirmed. We will arrange a convenient time with you.
- How long does it take? The process is quick and straightforward, usually taking around 15-20 minutes.
- What’s involved? A member of our team will meet you on-site to walk you through the facility, demonstrate how to use the smart access systems and equipment, and cover essential fire and safety procedures.
2. Key Areas Covered in Your Induction
During your induction, we will cover the following key areas to ensure you are comfortable and confident using the site.
A. Smart Access & Security
We will show you how to use your smartphone to unlock main gates, external doors, and how to find your access codes within your account. We will also explain how to secure your individual unit with your own padlock.
B. Smart Lighting
Our facilities are equipped with smart lighting that is activated by motion sensors. If the lights in your area switched off, simply wave your arm towards one of the cameras to reactivate them.
C. Using the Goods Lift Safely
Our goods lifts are for transporting your belongings between floors. It is crucial for your safety that you understand how to operate them correctly.
IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING:
The lift is for GOODS ONLY. No persons are permitted to ride in the lift under any circumstances.

D. Fire Safety & Emergencies
We will walk you through the primary fire escape routes, show you the location of fire call points, and the external assembly point.
Important: We will specifically show you the Out-of-Hours Escape Route. Please note that the quickest way out of the building during out-of-hours might be different from the normal route.
E. Automatic Sliding Doors
Our main entrance features automatic sliding doors for your convenience. In the unlikely event of a power failure, these doors can be pushed open manually for emergency exit.

F. What Can NOT Be Stored (Prohibited Items)
For the safety of all customers and staff, we strictly enforce Clause 9 of our Terms and Conditions regarding prohibited items. During your induction, we will confirm that you are not storing:
- Explosives & Flammables: Including petrol, diesel, propane, solvents, paints, aerosols, fireworks, or gas cylinders.
- Hazardous Materials: Toxic chemicals, asbestos, clinical waste, or radioactive materials.
- Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, or any other weapons.
- Perishables & Living Things: Food, plants, animals, or any damp/smelly items that could attract pests.
