Question: What are the access hours for the storage units?
Answer: You can access your unit 24/7, 365 days a year — day or night, weekends and bank holidays included. For the step-by-step entry guide, see our Birmingham Self StorageAccess Your Unit instructions.
Question: I’ve never used “humanless” self storage before — how does it work?
Answer: “Humanless” doesn’t mean there are never people on site — it means the process is designed to be simple, automated and available 24/7, so you can stay in control without waiting for staff to let you in.
We do have staff on site during normal office hours (and sometimes out of hours too) — but day-to-day access and unit entry is built to work even when nobody’s at the desk. For the step-by-step entry guide, see Birmingham Self StorageAccess Your Unit.
Question: I’m at the Digbeth/Highgate site, but it looks closed. How do I get in?
Answer: No worries — because we’re a 24/7 automated site, shutters/doors can look “closed” when you arrive out of hours. Follow our Birmingham Self StorageAccess Your Unit guide to enter and get to your storage area safely.
Question: Who can access my storage unit?
Answer: Only you and your Authorised Persons can access the unit. Anyone you authorise will need to provide proof of identity before they’re approved.
Question: What proof of identity is required to access the storage facility?
Answer: Usually we’ll ask for:
- Photo ID (passport or driving licence), and
- Proof of address (for example a recent utility bill)
We may accept other documents if agreed by the team.
Question: Can I use my storage unit for anything other than storage?
Answer: In general, a storage unit can’t be used for living in, making/processing goods, or as a permanent business address.
That said, we understand how start-ups and small businesses work, so we offer two helpful options:
- Daily licence — use your unit as a temporary workspace on licensed days (and we provide power at no extra cost on those days).
- Meeting room hire — available by the hour.
Question: Who is responsible for the keys and padlock?
Answer: You’re responsible for keeping your keys safe and for your unit padlock. Only one padlock is allowed per unit.
Question: Can Birmingham Self Storage enter my unit without my permission?
Answer: We’ll normally give notice if we need access for inspections or repairs. We may enter without notice only if there’s an emergency, a legal requirement, or we reasonably suspect a breach of the agreement.
Question: What items are not allowed in storage?
Answer: You must not store anything dangerous or illegal. This includes (but isn’t limited to): perishable goods/food, plants, animals, flammables, weapons, chemicals, illegal items, and high-value items unless agreed in advance. Please check the Terms & Conditions for the full list.
Question: What if I need to move my things into a different unit?
Answer: If we need you to relocate to another unit, we’ll give notice. If you don’t move your items within the notice period, we may move them for you (at our cost).
Question: What happens if I pay late?
Answer: Late payments incur a fee of £12 or 12.5% of the rental charge (whichever is greater). If payment is still not made within 30 days, an additional £100 administration charge and £20 collection charge will apply.
Question: What happens if I don’t pay my fees?
Answer: If fees aren’t paid, we may restrict access, continue charging fees, and (as a last resort) sell the contents to recover the debt, in line with the agreement and the law.
Question: How do I get my deposit back?
Answer: Your deposit is returned to your card after the agreement ends, minus any deductions for unpaid fees, damage, or outstanding charges.
Question: How do I update my personal details?
Answer: You can log into our system and update your details directly.
Question: What should I do if something is lost or damaged?
Answer: If you’ve purchased Contents Protection Insurance, tell us as soon as you discover any loss/damage and complete the claim form with the requested information.
If you haven’t purchased Insurance, you’re responsible for any loss or damage to your contents.
Question: Is my stuff insured by Birmingham Self Storage?
Answer: No — we don’t automatically insure your belongings. You’ll need your own insurance against normal risks, or you can purchase optional insurance from us.
Question: What is Contents Protection Insurance and what does it cover?
Answer: Contents Protection is an optional cover that helps protect against specified risks (loss, damage or destruction), as long as the fee is paid and you comply with the agreement.
Question: How do I end my storage agreement?
Answer: Either you or we can end the agreement with notice. When your agreement ends, you must remove everything from the unit and leave it clean and empty.
Question: Can I transfer my unit to someone else?
Answer: Not without our consent — you can’t assign your rights or transfer the unit to another person unless we agree in writing.
Question: What security measures do you have in place?
Answer: We have CCTV and smoke alarms, running 24/7, covering all units and corners.
We also offer an optional individual CCTV service (16GB recording) so you can monitor your unit on your phone and set motion alerts.
Question: How are disputes handled?
Answer: We’ll always try to resolve issues informally first. If needed, disputes can go through conciliation/alternative dispute resolution before court proceedings. Please notify us in writing if you want to raise a dispute.
Question: What are the emergency procedures on site?
Answer: In an emergency, report to the site office (if staffed) or contact the out-of-hours duty manager. Follow the fire and evacuation instructions shown on site signage.
Question: Can I share a unit with friends or family?
Answer: Yes, that’s fine — but anyone who needs access must be approved and added as an Authorised Person with valid ID.
Question: What’s the difference between Digbeth/Highgate and Duddeston?
Answer: Both sites offer automated, humanless 24/7 access. Digbeth/Highgate is aimed more at household/student storage, while Duddeston is set up for business container/pallet storage. Choose whichever fits what you’re storing and where you want to access from.
Question: Do both locations use the same contact details?
Answer: Yes — both sites use the same phone number and email, but each has its own address and access route.
Question: What address is the Digbeth/Highgate branch?
Answer: Merit House, Stanhope Street, Birmingham, B12 0UX.
Question: What address is the Duddeston/Saltley branch?
Answer: Unit 2, Network Park, Birmingham, B8 1AU.
Question: How do I choose the right unit size?
Answer: When you’re picking a unit size on our website, you’ll also see a little “carton/box” illustration showing everyday items inside the space. It’s only a rough guide (everyone packs differently), but most customers find it helps them picture the size properly. If you’re unsure, give us a shout and we’ll help you choose.
Question: Can I drive up to my unit to load/unload?
Answer: We aim to make loading straightforward. You can park close by and use our pump truck and forklift (if you have valid licence). If you’re unsure, contact us and we’ll advise the best way in.
Question: Do you provide trolleys or lifting help?
Answer: We have trolley, pump truck, and forklift available on site. If you need help with heavy items, our staff is happy to help but we do charge £10 per 15min.
Question: Can you accept deliveries for me (eCommerce / business customers)?
Answer: Yes, please do tell us in advance what you’re planning (courier type, pallet size, frequency) and we’ll confirm what we can support at the site.
Question: Can I store a motorbike / bike / tools?
Answer: Usually yes — as long as it’s safe, not leaking fuel/oil, and not a prohibited item. Ask us if you’re storing anything unusual.
Question: What payments do you accept, and can I get invoices/receipts?
Answer: You can pay online via your credit/debit card (preferred), we also accept cheque, bank transfer, and paypal. Invoices/receipts can be downloaded directly from our website.
Question: What happens if I forget how to access the building out of hours?
Answer: Check the Birmingham Self StorageAccess Your Unit guide first — it covers entry step-by-step. If you’re still stuck, contact our out-of-hours support/duty manager.
