The idea of starting a self storage business first took root in my head about twenty years ago — back when I was desperately looking for somewhere, anywhere, to keep the seasonal stock for my new online retail venture, Allcam.
I remember running through warehouses and lockups, doing the math over and over again, realising how clever the self storage model was. Customers bring in their goods, store them themselves, and pay you rent every month. Recurring revenue, minimal labour — it sounded like a dream business.
Except, of course, I didn’t have a warehouse. Or the capital. Or even the faintest idea where to begin.
Over the years, it lay dormant while I continued my online retail business and invested in commercial properties here and there. Every so often, it would nudge me — quietly — but life was busy, and dreams without timing are like seeds left in a drawer. They wait.
And then, one day, the soil shifted. The seed stirred again.
It started, as many stories do, not with inspiration — but with a crisis.
